Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a widely used term for a range of alternative traditional therapies that use essential oils and other herbal compounds for the treatment or prevention of illness. It is designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms of diseases or conditions and does this by assisting the body’s natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself. This may include massaging oils, or any topical application that uses absolutely pure, essential oils which are either absorbed through the skin or inhaled. The essential oils used in aromatherapy have a different composition compared to other herbal products because of the distillation process used in aromatherapy.

Essential oils consist of tiny aromatic molecules that are readily absorbed via the skin, and whilst breathing they enter the lungs. These therapeutic constituents then enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body where they can deliver their beneficial healing powers. Because they are highly concentrated, only a small quantity of essential oil is required to bring about results.
The inhalation of essential oils stimulates that part of the brain which is connected to smell i.e. the olfactory system. (Essential oils, phytoncides and other natural volatile organic compounds (VOCs) work differently.) A signal is then sent to the limbic system of the brain which controls emotions and retrieves learned memories. This causes chemicals to be released which make the person feel relaxed, calm, or even stimulated whether improving sleep quality or enhancing the immune system.
When applied topically (on to the skin) they activate thermal receptors and destroy microbes and fungi. If the aromatherapy includes massage the effect is to further relax the person. Therefore, these essential oils are said to have a direct pharmacological effect. Aromatherapists utilise the synergy between the body and aromatic oils

Massage

Our massage principles use Tuina, which is a kind of energy bodywork upon which many modern complementary therapies such as Shiatsu, Acupressure, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, and Lymphatic Draining are based. Chiropractic and Physiotherapy manipulation are also founded upon Tuina techniques.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle therapy in which the therapist uses thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to the client's feet and/or hands as those parts mirror the body. All organs, systems and glands can be mapped onto areas of the feet called reflex points. A reflexologist knows how to stimulate the reflex points to bring about a response in the corresponding part of the body.
